I have tried to keep blogs before about myself, and I never end up keeping up with them, or never knowing what to say. So, here is an attempt to have a blog on a theme. Inspired by my co-worker Mary (who has been starting/working on some blogs this year: technolution.wordpress.com and amerimom.wordpress.com) and a creepy story that I heard on WNYC’s On The Media, I decided to keep track of creepy media and advertising, cool hunting (you should watch Frontline: The Merchants of Cool, if you haven’t), and media literacy resources and curriculum I find along the way. I think that I will be able to go strong in the beginning, I might have a backlog of these ideas in my head, so…stay tuned (or rss feeded).
Trying blogging again.

I just stumbled onto your blog. I’m fascinated with paradessence too and the paradoxical nature of the human psyche. Paradessent marketing works because it subconsciously tells us we can have our cake and eat it too … while real life tells us we need to make choices around our competing needs … needs to be both private and known, dependent and independent, unique and fit in, excited and calm, etc. How we make those often difficult choices is what defines us as individuals (and as a culture). If we can feel we don’t have to chose between competing drives, the product/idea will be most appealing. Several of my favorite examples of paradessent branding: Fashion … be uniqely you by wearing what every body else wears and use make up to look natural. I even remember a Colonel Sanders’ Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet being marketed as a Mother’s Day destination … for the quick and easy “home cooked” meal!
